Newport Beach, California based Almond Surfboards take us through the process of creating one of their boards from start to finish. It is definitely an art (or four.) Shaping, laminating, fitting fins, hot glassing and finishing. Top it off with some fine music and it’s ten minutes well spent.

The dunes often contain a veritable pic and mix of characters. Couples sharing an illicit moment, runners training, families exploring and the odd musician. When I started surfing a couple of years ago there would be a guy walking around the dunes playing bagpipes. I imagined his wife chucking him out to get a few hours peace, dreading the wall of sound the instrument creates. He would wander the...

Under the Weather - Surfing in New Zealand. Funded by crowd sourcing this surf film documents a trip from the North to the South NZ. Big waves, small waves, messy and clean waves… Damon Meade has got it covered. Not only that but the surrounding scenery is breathtaking.

Nice short film about Danny Hess of Hess Surfboards. Danny makes beautiful boards from a mixture of recycled EPS foam cores and wood along with complete wood boards. He’s also got a great looking shop, an enviable boardroom and super wood workshop. Check out the boards on his site, the Snaggle Paw is my favourite.

Whilst reading Liquid Salt Magazine I came a across a post / interview with Artist Alex Weinstein. Intrigued I entered his name into a popular search engine and found this video about Alex by Eric Minh Swenson. His sculptural swell/wave pieces are incredible. Well worth a watch, super inspiring. It’s a musical Friday… thought i’d share this mix by Cyril Hahn. I guess it’s not for everyone, but, if hints of house, slow tempo’s and a liberal dose of R&B sound interesting give it a try. Should also point out there are a few rude words floating around the mix, so might not be work safe.

Westerly is a feature length documentary film about Peter Drouyn and his controversial metamorphosis into Westerly Windina. In 2002, Peter suffered a traumatic surfing accident that nearly drowned him. Not long after, Peter’s feminine side fully emerged. ”It was a supernova,” said Westerly. “It just kicked in one night, and suddenly Peter went, Westerly was there.” ...

Stumbled across this beautifully filmed short film about skiing in Dubai… It’s part of a series called A Skiers Journey. It’s a simple recipe: Adventure, travel and skiing… but it certainly works!

Like retro board shapes? Have a gander at this documentary by Pablo Ballester about the revival and renewed interest in older style board shapes. Some interesting thoughts on a bit of new technology too, partial carbon stringers and the like. Via Liquid Salt
